Bahrain International Airport Extensions To Terminal Building And Associated Works

Phase 1 and 2 of the works were mainly confined to the landside of Bahrain International Airport comprising the following designed by Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick.

* A new extension to the existing terminal together with refurbishment of the existing terminal building. The new extension is just over twenty thousand square metres in area. Refurbishment work involved internal alterations and modification of finishes and services to maintain compatibility with the new extension to the building. The buildings have a structural steel frame with concrete floors and aluminium/glass curtain walling

* Extension and refurbishment of the existing services building and installation of new air conditioning plant. Upgrading of the air conditioning and other building services in the existing terminal also formed part of the works.

* Extension of the existing ground level car-park and a new elevated road to serve the new high-level departure concourse.

* The supply and installation by Nominated sub-contractors of specialist equipment including Passenger Loading Bridges, Flight Information Display Systems, Baggage Handling Equipment, Lifts & Escalators.

Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick were also engaged for Phase 3 to design the reinstatement of work deferred at the tender negotiation stage.

The reinstated work largely involved finishes, certain mechanical and electrical services, elements of flight information display handling system and other specialist facilities.

The most significant effect of the Phase 3 works was to increase the usable areas of the Level 'O' public arrivals concourse and level '6' landslide departure concourse by 40% and 50% respectively, over those made available for use at the opening of Phase 1. In particular it resulted in an increase number of check-in desks from 24 to 40.

When work commenced in the existing terminal building it became apparent that all the structural concrete (poured in 1971) was defective. It was necessary, therefore, to demolish and replace all structural elements within the existing building.

The total cost of Phase 1, 2, 3 and slab replacement amounted to approximately BD 35 million. Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick appointed D.G. Jones & Partners to integrate within their team to provide full pre and post contract quantity surveying services. D.G. Jones & Partners pre-contract services commenced in 1985 and the project was finally completed on site in August 1997.
